This is the logo of Maremar, our wonderful first line seaside holiday rental house in Sant Feliu de Guixols, near Girona on the Costa Brava in Catalunya, Spain.

The logo is taken from a fabulous painting “La Celestina” or “The Matchmaker” by the established British artist Chris Gollon who, as we always say,  is renowned for painting life into everything and bringing everything to life.

Just 30 minutes by road from Girona airport, our luxury Costa Brava vacation rental is within walking distance (or a very short and scenic tourist “train” ride during the day) of the shops, restaurants, nightlife, port and sandy beach of Sant Feliu de Guixols. But… it is far enough away to forget you are anywhere near a thriving seaside town and the associated sounds of revelry and good times!

Maremar is in a small development used by the well heeled of Barcelona and foreigners who want a well-maintained, easy to use bolt hole like ourselves. Our house is in a row of three, perched above the small coast road with uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean. The houses have been configured in such as way that our only next door neighbour (on our other side are the pine woods) is about two metres beneath us and also a couple of metres behind us. This means that our top gardens are very secluded and are not overlooked. See the pictures of our outside areas which give you some idea of how the whole thing works.

It is a short drive from Girona, that magnificent cathedral town which is the capital of our province. And as well as that, we are within striking distance of many fascinating locations, from the houses and museums of Salvador and Gala Dali, through ancient villages and Roman ruins, to the great metropolis of Barcelona.

It is perfect for a less frantic family holiday in the summer season (June/July/August). The community pool is so large that it never seems to be full and it is always possible to have it to yourself if you want a proper exercise. But the great thing for families is that there are other children using the pool, so friends can be made and games played.

The sandy beach and rocky coves are a 15 minute walk away and, in the summer months, there is also a tourist train (on wheels!)  which runs along the coast road allowing you to hop on and off if you want to visit the second gorgeous beach in Sant Pol, the beautiful Ermita at Sant Elm (with its stunning views up and down the coast (you can walk there easily too)) or get back home after a hard day’s sunbathing.

It is not far from Platja d’Aro which has all of the swimming chutes (with a free coach to and from it in summer), noisy beaches, tourist shops and nightclubs, but it is far enough away that you can take it or leave it as you wish…

June is ideal for adults wanting a laid back holiday as this is generally outside the school holiday season and the weather is usually absolutely stunning. And in May and September it is usually still swimmable for adults and much, much quieter (although it is not ever that noisy). It is in these months that you are likely to have the enormous community pool entirely to yourself all of the time. We have even had some guests swimming in the sea (!) as well as in the pool in April and October without any ill effects!

Lovingly designed by us with the help of our local developer,  we have finished Maremar to a high standard of comfort. It gives you an ideal base from which to explore the Costa Brava and indeed the whole of Catalunya. Sant Feliu de Guixols is a wealthy town with the strapline “open all year”, so the cafes and restaurants are always open and there is always something going on in town.
